Mobile Health and Wellness Program joins forces with local community to promote health
July 16, 2024
Aimed at enhancing access to wellness resources and led by the VCU School of Nursing, the Mobile Health and Wellness Program (MHWP) collaborates with community partners and businesses to deliver new services to communities across central Virginia. At the Virginia Community Resource Center in Petersburg, the program has partnered with Derek Rives, owner of Pipe Up Fitness, to bring fitness classes to Petersburg residents.
The classes are a chance to introduce the local community to new opportunities that promote healthy lifestyles and encourage physical activity. Committed to promoting physical fitness across all age groups, Rives offers classes that combine cardio fitness, muscle building, and flexibility training, catering to an audience ranging from energetic kids to active seniors.
"My journey was to bring something, you know, motivational to the city," Rives said. "I want to keep my seniors healthy and guide my youth."
Rives's dedication to promoting health across generations fits perfectly with the program’s wellness goals.
“I met Derek at the Virginia Community Resource Center (VCRC) and was immediately impressed by his energy and passion for his work,” said Genevieve Beaird, Ph.D., clinical associate professor for the VCU School of Nursing and one of the Petersburg site coordinators. “His approach to physical fitness for kids and older adults in Petersburg aligns with our multi-dimensions of wellness philosophy within MHWP. He recognizes that exercise not only benefits us physically, but has extensive benefits for our mental, social and spiritual wellness as well.”
We are very grateful to our partners at VSU Institute of Public Health for allowing us to use their space at the VCRC. They have been valuable advisors as we have worked to build our program. We look forward to building more partnerships within Petersburg.

Established in 2012, the Mobile Health and Wellness Program brings holistic care and services directly to the doorstep of communities in and around the Richmond, Virginia region. Offering access to wellness checks, assistance with long-term health conditions, wellness coaching and care coordination, the program’s focus is on the unique needs of each person and making sure everyone gets the support they need to live well.
"MHWP only succeeds if we have strong community partners because we know that is important for sustainability and building trust in the areas we serve," said Beaird. "By developing relationships with existing community leaders and institutions, we hope to form a strong network where everyone involved benefits in some way. I love to see us serve as a conduit for elevating individuals in the community."
The partnership between MHWP and Pipe Up Fitness exemplifies a community united in their shared commitment to well-being. As the program continues to grow and draw newcomers, organizers hope to see an impact on the community's health, demonstrating that collaboration is essential for building a healthier future for all.
